The Weekly Roundup: 4/9-4/15

So,  I'm gonna do this new thing where I recap the week that was in Padres baseball!

Even though the odds are that I won't remember to do this with any regular frequency, there's been a TON to write about this week- and I'm banking on the hope that following weeks will be as exciting as this one!

After a disastrous start to the year, the Padres won both series they played, winning 2 out of 3 against the Rockies and 3 out of 4 against the Giants, so check my thoughts below:

Padres vs. Rockies: (4/9-4/11)

  1. Padres 7,  Rockies 6
  2. Padres 5, Rockies 2
  3. Padres 4, Rockies 6

  • First off, NOLAN ARENADO IS LITERAL HUMAN GARBAGE. In the series finale, Luis Perdomo threw at him in retaliation for Margot getting hit by a pitch and hurt the night before- and well, just watch the video below:

  • Like it or not, retaliation is a time-tested baseball tradition and a staple of the game's unwritten rulebook. Aside from Arenado, EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. in Coors Field knew what was coming. The fact that Arenado reacted the way he did was beyond the pale, and simply unbecoming for a player of his caliber.
  • Also, kind've amazing that Perdomo's glove throw perfectly struck Arenado- if only he could locate his fastball like that......
  • CLAYTON RICHARD WITH THE BIG FLY!!!!! (check the 0:25 mark)

  • It's kinda sad that this home run is what made the difference in the game... and perhaps even sadder that CR3 went deep before Hosmer did.
  • In regards to the latter though, Hosmer AT LAST went yard in the season finale:

Padres vs. Giants (4/12- 4/15)
  1. Padres 0,  Giants 7
  2. Padres 5,  Giants 1
  3. Padres 5,  Giants 4
  4. Padres 10,  Giants 1
  • I didn't even watch the first game, but it was BAD. Mitchell has been off to a ROUGH start this year- if things don't improve quickly, I wouldn't be surprised if he's usurped by Robbie Erlin or Eric Lauer and relegated to the bullpen (where he may just be a better fit anyways).
  • In their first 40 at-bats of the series, the Padres were 1 for 40. Sigh.
  • Thankfully though, the slow start didn't last. The Padres' bats looked alive in the last three games of series- Christian Villanueva, Hunter Renfroe, and Franchy Cordero all went deep.
  • Speaking of Villanueva, he also drove in five runs and hit two home runs. On the heels of another great series, he's likely cemented himself as the full-time starting third baseman going forward. Sorry, Chase Headley.

  • Small sample size be damned, Jose Pirela looks like a MONSTER early in the year- he's hitting .324 and leading the NL in hits. Giants pitchers simply could not get him out. I'm bullish about what's to come this year from him.
  • Man, the Giants really lost the game because Joe Panik got called out at home LOL. Even I'll admit; he was definitely safe.
  • Finally, Joey "looking very Fuego as always" Lucchesi was DOMINANT in his Sunday start. Six innings, one run allowed, and 9 strikeouts? That's a good night in the big leagues. This kid belongs here- expect to see his face in Petco Park for a loooooong time.

COMING UP...

The Dodgers are in town tonight for a three game series, and then the team heads to Arizona to take on the Diamondbacks this weekend.

The Padres, at 7-10, ARE NOW IN THIRD PLACE.

THIS IS NOT A DRILL!

See you guys next (maybe) week!

Padres Sign Eric Hosmer

After enduring the most boring baseball offseason in recent memory , the Padres took a metaphorical sledgehammer to the frozen free agent market and signed first baseman Eric Hosmer to an 8 year, 144 million dollar contract- by far the largest and most lucrative in team history . Obviously, the prospect of signing Hosmer has been an extremely polarizing subject amongst Padre fans, but he does indeed have a nice resume; he had an All-Star season last year (25 home runs and 4.1 Fangraphs Wins Above Replacement), won two Gold Gloves, will be a clubhouse leader ( essentially a worthless construct, but whatever lol ), and was a key contributor to the Royals' 2015 World Series-winning team. The Padres even got him for less than we were expecting- the first five years of the contract are front-loaded and will pay him 20 million dollars annually, in addition to a 5 million dollar signing bonus . After the fifth year, Hosmer can opt out of his deal. Should he decide to sta...

Padre Bloggers Are Idiots

Hey, friends! Baseball is back, and that means it's time to point out how our fellow Padre fans are IDIOTS sometimes- especially our friends at the prosaic Gaslamp Ball, who published this  gem decrying Bill Center's number 19 and 20 entries on his list of Top 100 Padres : current owners Peter Seidler and Ron Folwer. Which, I will be the FIRST to admit.... this might be a little high for the two. But some of the comments the anonymous author of the GLB article makes are incredibly foolish, like this little snippet: " These two have only known failure since coming to Petco Park. They are peddling the same vision that other executives formulated and they’ve only been following this vision for all of 6 months." I mean, yeah, the team still hasn't won yet.  But  this team NEVER wins- we've had 14 winning seasons in a franchise history that spans nearly 50 years! So if we're going to use winning as a benchmark, Seilder and Folwer look like Robert Kraft i...

It's the Little Things...

If you haven't been paying attention to Padres baseball- you probably should. Which, I suppose, a fair amount of you are guilty of; they haven't exactly been playing the best baseball this season. The Padres are almost universally ranked at (or near) the bottom of every major power ranking , and they sit in the basement of the competitive NL West, after all. Well, time to get out from under the rock. The Padres have won five straight, and swept the Chicago Cubs- the reigning World Series champions. Watch that above video if you still don't believe me. Yeah, me too, Patrick. Me too.  (See what I did with the rock reference earlier? Somebody give me an award! If you were born before 1980 and reading this, that pink starfish looking character you can see above lives under a rock. Hope that clears things up.) Anyways, this "winning" thing probably isn't sustainable for the rest of the season. More than likely, the Padres will regress t...
